Permits at Grand Canyon

The backcountry lottery and Phantom Ranch are two separate systems — here's how each one works and when to apply.

Permits for Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon's permit system has two separate tracks, and confusing them is the most common planning error. The inner-canyon backcountry permit (overnight camping below the rim) runs through the Backcountry Information Center lottery on Recreation.gov — applications open 4 months before your target month. Phantom Ranch (the only lodging below the rim) is a separate Xanterra reservation that opens 13 months out and is unrelated to the BIC permit. Day hikes on Bright Angel and South Kaibab need no permit. Each card below carries the permit type, the application window, and a direct link.

Permit listings sourced from the Recreation Information Database (RIDB). Confirm current dates, fees, and how to apply on Recreation.gov or at the park before you go — some permits are first-come or issued in person.
