Where to watch

Finding the Wolves in Lamar Valley

Lamar Valley — the broad open valley along the North Entrance to Cooke City road, the only park road open to regular vehicles all winter. Pullouts at Slough Creek, the Lamar River bridge, and Hitching Post Flats are the standing wolf-watching anchors. NPS calls the northern range one of the best places in the world to watch wolves.

What makes it happen: Two things conspire to make the cold months Yellowstone's prime wolf-watching window: elk and bison are driven down into the lower valley by snow, and the wolves move with them — visible against snow against open meadows. Pack activity peaks at dawn and dusk, when the wolves are out hunting. By summer the elk herds break up to higher meadows and the wolves disperse with them; sightings drop sharply.

Plan around it

How to time your visit

Plan a winter trip routed through the North Entrance at Gardiner — the road through Mammoth to Cooke City is the only year-round car road in the park, and Lamar Valley sits between them. Stay in Gardiner or at Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel (open through early March this season). Be in the valley by sunrise with a spotting scope; pull off only at named pullouts and never block the road. Keep the maximum NPS-required distance from wolves and bears at all times — much wider than for other wildlife. The volunteer wolf-watchers with high-power scopes are a regular fixture and will share a look and confirm what you're seeing.
