Spring — shuttle on, the canyon at its greenest
Moderate crowds Mar–May
The canyon shuttle is running and the high heat hasn't arrived: daytime highs climb from the 60s in March to the 80s by late May. March traffic is roughly three times February's, so reserve a Watchman or Springdale stay months out, and check the Narrows status — spring runoff can close it without much warning. The Angels Landing permit lottery for these months opens February 13, so apply before you book the trip.
What's open: Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is shuttle-access only (private vehicles excluded) from March into November; the Narrows can close on snowmelt-driven river flow; daily Angels Landing day-before lottery runs year-round (12:01 a.m. to 3 p.m. MT).

Summer — start at dawn, take to the river
Peak crowds Jun–Aug
Summer days run past 100°F most of July and August, and the canyon shuttle is the only way up the Scenic Drive. The trip works if you flip your day: be on Angels Landing or Observation Point at sunrise, take the river through the Narrows in the afternoon, and stay in Springdale with air-conditioning. July–September is monsoon season — flash-flood watches kill the Narrows on any day with a thunderstorm building over the upper canyon, so check at the visitor center before you wade in.
What's open: Shuttle runs daily and private vehicles cannot drive the Scenic Drive; Angels Landing permits required (apply by Jun 1–Aug 31 lottery opening April 1, or the daily day-before lottery); monsoon flash-flood risk in slot canyons July–September.

Fall — cooler days, gold cottonwoods
Moderate crowds Sep–Nov
The trip every regular protects. Highs slide from the 90s in early September into the 60s by November, the canyon cottonwoods turn gold in late October and early November, and the shuttle keeps running until late fall. Crowds drop after Labor Day. The Narrows usually has its most reliable water clarity now — a real consideration if a wade up the river was the reason you came.
What's open: Shuttle runs through late November (verify the current-year end date on nps.gov/zion); the Sep 1–Nov 30 Angels Landing lottery opens July 1; cottonwoods peak late October to early November.

Winter — drive the canyon yourself
Light crowds Jan–Feb · Dec
The one stretch of year you can drive your own car up Zion Canyon. The shuttle runs only during holiday weeks, snow dusts the high walls, and crowds drop to their lowest of the year. Trails ice over in shaded spots — bring traction devices — and treat Kolob Terrace as effectively closed. Lodging rates in Springdale fall sharply, and the Dec 1–Feb 28 Angels Landing lottery opens October 1 if you want a winter ascent.
What's open: Zion Canyon Scenic Drive open to private vehicles December through February (shuttle limited to holiday weeks); Upper Kolob Terrace Road closed; trails often icy at higher elevations; Angels Landing winter-window lottery opened October 1.
